The Osakis girls’ track and field team was right there all day with a Class A True Team state title on the line this past Saturday in Stillwater.

0 Talk about it

In the end, a second-place trophy wasn’t a bad consolation prize for a deep and talented Silverstreaks squad. Osakis finished just three points behind Luverne for the championship as the Cardinals ended with 394.5 points, while the Silverstreaks ended with 391.5.

“All season long these girls have bought into the team-first philosophy and have worked extremely hard in practice to earn it,” head coach Lee VanNyhuis said. “I’m so proud of what these girls have done. The veterans lead this team, but a lot of young girls really stepped up too.”

The Silverstreaks held a lead for much of the day on Saturday. They held an almost eight-point advantage on Luverne after eight events and the two teams were tied at 279.5 after 13 events. That’s how close it was all day between these two teams.

“Luverne is a great team, and to battle with them like that was outstanding,” VanNyhuis said. “We knew coming into the meet that they’d be the favorite. All we asked for coming in was for maximum focus and effort and no matter how things ended up, we would be satisfied.”

The relays once again had a great day for Osakis. The Silverstreaks won in the 4x200-meter relay as Makayla Hoglin, Abby Stroup, Taylor Kraemer and Brittney Sadlemyer finished in 1:49.97 to hold off Blue Earth Area. The group of Tianna Stanek, Alexa Hoffarth, T. Kraemer and Sadlemyer won the 4x100 relay in 52.28 seconds. Hoglin, Brooke Sorenson, Samantha Jones and Hannah Szech also won in the 4x400 in a time of 4:12.16.

Individually, Jones had a second-place finish in the 800-meter run in 2:27.94. Jones is one of those young athletes who have stepped up for this team as just a seventh grader. Freshman Kayla Sorenson also finished second in the high jump by clearing 5-00. She was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.95 seconds and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 51.20.
