Top 20 Professionals: Kathleen Pohlig -- Cherry Street Books
With her 60th birthday approaching, Kathleen Pohlig decided to put her passion for reading to work. In June 2007, with the encouragement of family and friends, she opened Cherry Street Books in Alexandria, an independent bookstore catering to readers of all ages.
According to nominator and employee, Lee Becker, Pohlig utilizes her bookstore for civic involvement, offering book groups, poetry readings, author events, a preschool story hour and discounts to educators and other community groups.
She has also provided a pleasant, family friendly work environment for her employees, allowing flexibility as needs arise.
Pohlig is an active member of the Downtown Merchants Association and has been a board member and strong supporter of the Lakes Area Chamber Music Society since its beginning as the Festival of the Lakes Concert Series.
She and her husband, Bruce, served as chairpersons of the Vote Yes for a Brighter Future Committee to build support for a new high school. Pohlig also served on the Alexandria School District 206 School Board for many years.
As a member of the Alexandria United Methodist Church, she has been an active member of the United Methodist Women. She's also been involved with the League of Women Voters, the mentorship program at the Alexandria School District, and the Douglas County Hospice Program.
Pohlig is an avid baseball fan and has hosted members of the Alexandria Beetles.
