Time to clean up clutter
Just in time for spring cleaning and Earth Day: Alexandria's Free Metal Pick Up Day.
Available exclusively to residents who live in the city limits, this year's event is set to take place Tuesday, April 28.
City residents are encouraged to get rid of old, junky metal objects that have been cluttering up their yard, garage or basement by placing the items on the boulevard.
City crews will haul the items away at no charge.
To get rid of the junk, residents must fill out an agreement form - available in today's newspaper and in the Lakeland Shopping Guide - and mail it or deliver the form to Alexandria City Hall, 704 Broadway, Alexandria, MN 56308.
Time is running out; forms will not be accepted after 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 27. Telephone requests for the service will not be accepted.
A couple other things to note:
Televisions and computers are not accepted.
Commercial customers are not eligible.
Free Metal Pick Up Day has been a city tradition for years.
In the last couple of years alone, about 85 truckloads of metal were hauled away to Jack's Family Recycling Center in Alexandria.
The items - ranging from old barbecue grills and bed frames to broken refrigerators and washing machines - are stripped down, separated and sold to processing plants in the Twin Cities, where the metal is recycled.
