Nearly 500 community members recently kicked off the beginning of Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County's (HFHDC) build season by taking part in its annual Hard Hat Breakfast.

The breakfast sets the stage for the build season and invites community members to build in partnership with HFHDC and change the lives of families through affordable home ownership.

The event raises funds to support the building of homes in partnership with families in need. This year, the local affiliate plans to build and repair homes in partnership with seven families.

One of the partnerships celebrated was with Rick and Lori Thompson, as HFHDC recently began construction of their home.

Local volunteers, donors and community members took part in a Bless the Build event on Friday, May 10, when the Thompson family broke ground for their future home.

The Thompson home will be the ninth home Thrivent Builds has helped fund, bringing its investment locally to more than $850,000 since 2005. Thrivent Builds will also partner with HFHDC on the construction of a second home in July.

In addition to the Thrivent Builds partnership, local congregations will join with volunteer, financial and prayer support to build two homes as part of HFHDC's first Apostles Build.
