The Osakis tennis team kicked its season off with a couple matches against tough opponents on Saturday and came home from the Pequot Lakes quadrangular 1-1 after getting rained out against Hutchinson.

The Silverstreaks beat Lakeville South 4-3 after falling to Pequot Lakes by that same score. Hannah Szech (6-2, 6-3) and Jenna Fearing (6-3, 6-2) won at third and fourth singles, respectively, against Lakeville South. The duos of Alexa Hoffarth and Lauren Silbernick (first doubles, 6-3, 6-7 [3-7], 7-5) and Nicolle Klukken and Kali Giesler (third doubles, 6-4, 6-2) cemented the win in doubles.

Szech got two wins on the day after taking care of her fourth singles opponent 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 against Pequot Lakes. Hoffarth and Fearing won 7-5, 6-3 at first doubles in that match, while Klukken and Karlee Hoffarth won 6-2, 6-2 at third doubles. The Silverstreaks almost won the match, but Pequot Lakes found a way to win two three-set matches at third singles and second doubles.

“We had a good first day out versus good competition,” head coach Ryan Maddock said. “One of our main goals this regular season is to get all the girls as many tough, competitive matches as we can and then put it all together to be a threat to win the section again. We are looking for the girls to play with a fearlessness that allows their abilities to shine through.”

Osakis had its first home match this past Monday when it hosted a quadrangular. See next week’s issue of the Osakis Review for reactions from players and Maddock on what the Silverstreaks expect out of the 2014 season.
