Suspect charged in officer-involved shooting
A suspect who was shot by sheriff's deputies during a disturbance at a Garfield home appeared in Douglas County District Wednesday.
Jonathan Patrick Benson, 30, of Garfield was charged with one count of assault in the first degree and two counts of assault in the second degree.
Benson is held in custody with bail set at $500,000 bond or $100,000 cash.
The criminal complaint in this case has been filed with the Douglas County Court Administrator.
The charges stem from an incident that happened on February 6. At 10:51 p.m., Benson's mother, Frances Benson called 911 and requested help at her home at 9145 County Road 8 NW, Garfield.
She told dispatch that her son, who also lived in the house, was armed with a shotgun and was threatening others.
Deputies responded to the scene and tried to talk with Benson but he didn't cooperate and withdrew into the basement of the home, according to Douglas County Sheriff Troy Wolbersen.
A short time later, Benson, armed with a long gun, confronted deputies, the sheriff said. After he didn't comply with their commands, three deputies, Arthur Vinson, Paul Trautman and Jacob Asfeld, fired at him, striking him multiple times, Wolbersen said.
Benson was taken to the Douglas County Hospital and later air lifted to the St. Cloud Hospital.
Authorities delayed pressing charges until Benson's medical condition stabilized.
