Many people go through their daily routines without realizing how close they are to suffering a life-threatening stroke.

Unfortunately, most people don't notice a sign or symptom until after a stroke occurs. That's why stroke is commonly referred to as the "silent killer," ranking as the third leading cause of death in the United States.

During a screening, a certified ultrasound technician performs four preventative tests.

If a test discovers a potential health problem, an on-staff nurse for Stroke Detection Plus will follow up.

The following is a report of the normal and abnormal results found during Stroke Detection Plus' last screening in October in Alexandria,

Of the 52 carotid screenings performed:

Zero were interpreted as "critical" (which is 70 percent or greater vessel reduction and significant stenosis is present, and a full evaluation is strongly recommended).

Zero were interpreted as "significant" (which is approximately 50 percent to 69 percent vessel diameter reduction. The vessel has significant stenosis and further evaluation with their family physician was suggested).

Six were interpreted as "moderate" (which is less than 50 percent vessel diameter reduction, and re-screening in one year is suggested).

A total of 33 were interpreted as "mild" (which is some atherosclerotic plaques are present, but insignificant vessel reduction).

A total of 13 were interpreted as "normal" (essentially no plaque is seen and all the measurements taken indicate healthy vessels).

Of the 47 aortic aneurysm screenings performed: Zero were interpreted as an aneurysm and 47 were interpreted as normal.

Of the 48 ankle brachial index screenings performed: One was interpreted as abnormal and 47 were interpreted as normal.

Of the 30 osteoporosis screenings performed: Zero were interpreted as abnormal; 11 were interpreted as low; and 19 were interpreted as normal.
