The Osakis boys’ basketball team saw its season come to an end in the Section 6AA North opener last Thursday night after running into top-seeded Sauk Centre.

The Silverstreaks held the Mainstreeters to just 21 points in the first half and trailed by 11 at the break. Sauk Centre found its rhythm in the second half, putting up 52 points on its way to the 73-45 win.

“We played a great first half defensively, holding them to 21 points,” Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said. “We just couldn’t make our free throws or some open shots to cut the gap at the half. We executed the way we planned. We just didn’t finish on the offensive end. Their pressure got to us the second half and every loose ball went their way.”

Seniors Lane Berberich and Drew Fearing finished off their careers with double-digit scoring efforts. Berberich led the Silverstreaks with 17 points and Fearing added 10 points, two assists, three rebounds and two steals. Fellow senior guard Hunter Scherr had five points.

“We battled the whole game and got great effort from all of our players,” Hoelscher said. “Our seniors paved the way again. Nobody can say they didn’t give it their all tonight, and that’s something we can be proud of as a program.”

Osakis wraps up the season by doubling its win total from last year and finishing 6-20 overall. Hoelscher wanted this team to show improvement from a three-win season last winter, and he said he saw that throughout the season.

“I’m happy with the strides we made this year,” Hoelscher said. “Guys really started coming into their own at the end of the year. Some guys that we thought would make a bigger impact at the beginning of the year somewhat struggled until this last month. Those guys were not ready for the varsity style of play, but the experience they got on the court only allowed them to grow as a player. We saw some great things this past month in practice from these guys, and we are looking forward to the future.”
