Stockert’s 15 Ks down Willmar
The Alexandria baseball team played as clean of a game as one could expect for a season opener last Thursday night as Blake Stockert dominated the Willmar lineup in a 4-0 win.
The senior lefty had 15 strikeouts in just six innings of work. He allowed one hit and walked two before Chris Leary came on and overcame a walk and a hit to pitch a scoreless seventh inning.
Alexandria grabbed a 1-0 lead after Jake Booth scored on an error in the second inning. The Cardinals added two more in the fourth when Booth, Kris Setterstrom and Riley Hvezda each walked to drive in Grant Hockert and Grant Toivonen. The final run came in the sixth when Zach Peterson doubled in Toby Helgeson, who had singled with two outs.
“It was a great start to the season for this team. Our entire squad is going to make contributions throughout the season as we have a very deep roster with talented players who can play multiple positions. It is only the beginning for this group.”
The Cardinals were scheduled to be back on the field last night, Tuesday, for a double header at Bemidji before coming home for the opener at Knute Nelson Field for Senior Night on Thursday against Sartell.
