Stephen Bouman to speak at Shalom
The Rev. Dr. Stephen Bouman, executive director of the Congregational and Synodical Mission unit of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will preach at Shalom Lutheran Church of Alexandria.
He will speak on Sunday, February 16 at both the 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. worship services. He will also lead a workshop on “Engaging, Enlightening, Energizing for Ministry” at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The public is invited to attend all events. He will also preach at Lincoln Lutheran Church, rural Hoffman, at 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 15.
Bouman served as bishop of the ELCA Metropolitan New York Synod from September 1996 through January 2008 and became known for his public ministry in the wake of the September 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
He graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary/Seminex in 1973, received his Master of Sacred Theology from New York Theological Seminary in 1978 and his Doctor of Ministry degree in 1980, an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in 2001, and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Wagner College in 2008.
He has served congregations in New York and New Jersey. He is founder of the Diakonia ministry education program, which trains lay people for ministry in local congregations.
His parish ministry also included building multicultural outreach, launching two parochial schools, leadership in church-based community organizations, and ministries of assistance and advocacy among the poor.
Bouman served as chair of the ELCA Board of Higher Education and Schools and as a trustee for Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services and Wagner College in New York City. He currently serves on the board of Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Ministries in Chicago, Illinois.
He is a published author of a number of works, including They Are Us: Lutherans and Immigration and Grace All Around Us.
