State Senior Baseball: Whitecaps split, move into Class A bracket

Contributed Greg Nathe picked up a hit against Belle Plaine in the Whitecap's tournament opener last weekend. Carlos will play tonight, Friday, at 8 p.m. and will face Jordan.

A bloop hit in the bottom of the seventh cost Carlos a chance to battle for the State Class AA senior baseball title last weekend as the Whitecaps fell in their opener 1-0 to Belle Plaine, dropping them into the Class A tournament.

There, the Whitecaps claimed a 7-1 win over St. Louis Park to head into the final four this weekend.

Carlos will play Braemer in Jordan tonight, Friday, at 8:30 p.m., with the winner playing the winner of the Perham/Menahga-Sebeka game on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Union Hill for the Class A championship.

BELLE PLAINE 1, CARLOS 0

It was a head-to-head battle last Saturday in Carlos' state tournament opener as both the Whitecaps and the Belle Plaine Gray Tigers were scoreless heading into the bottom of the final inning.

"We lost a heartbreaker in the opening round for Class AA," said Whitecaps manager Troy Olson. "Belle Plaine beat us in the bottom of the seventh inning with a bloop hit, and it was a close play at the plate.

"Terry Knop pitched for Belle Plaine and kept us off balance the entire game," he added. "We had two leadoff doubles, but couldn't score a run or get a clutch hit.

"We had two outs in the bottom of the seventh and they got a walk, a stolen base and a bloop hit to win the game.

"Knop upped his season record to 10-0," said Olson. "He played [for] the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers under the tutelage of Dick Siebert."

Both teams picked up just four hits in the game as Mark Illies matched Knop in that category. He walked five and struck out four in the loss.

Greg Endres, Greg Nathe, Tom Illies and Ryan Burgau each had one hit.

CARLOS 7, ST. LOUIS PARK 1

Carlos' loss dropped them into the Class A bracket where they faced St. Louis Park on Sunday, winning 7-1.

The Cardinals dropped their Class AA opener 14-0 to fall into the Class A bracket as well.

The Whitecaps scored early, picking up four runs in the second and two more in the third to coast to the victory.

"It was a total team effort, as everybody was able to play at least two innings," said Olson. "Vinny Palyan was the pitcher and unleashed the big hit with the bases loaded, belting a double and clearing the bases."

Palyan struck out eight in his winning stint on the mound, allowing just two walks and one run. Brian Jacobson finished out the game, pitching the seventh.

Paired with Palyan's three-run double was Anderson's two-RBI performance. Seven different Whitecaps picked up one hit each in the win.
