State park winter activities planned
Lake Carlos State Park will offer multiple nature programs throughout the month of January.

Tuesday, January 1
1 to 4 p.m. First day hike: Meet at Lake View Group Camp.
A naturalist will guide a winter hike to see sights such as a frozen lake, snow-swept prairie and snow-glistened trees. Hikers will learn about the history of the park, its natural resources and cultural significance. The types of activities are weather and snow dependent.
Saturday, January 19
6 to 9 p.m. Candlelight event: Meet at Lake View Group Camp.
Participants can ski or snowshoe by the light of the full moon and candle luminaries set along the trails. Snacks and refreshments will be provided by Subway and The Bike and Fitness Company of Alexandria. All ages and skill levels are welcome. No registration is required.
Saturday, January 26
1 to 3 p.m. Winter birding: Meet at the visitor center.
A naturalist will lead a group on a birding safari to discover birds in the winter and learn what they do to survive. Learn basic identification tips. Dress for the weather, and bring binoculars, a bird book and camera if desired.
