The Osakis girls’ golf team came into its first ever Class AA state tournament with some nerves at play and it resulted in some higher scores than the Silverstreaks are used to at the Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan.

Osakis shot a team score of 366 on day one and finds itself in fifth place out of the eight teams. Detroit Lakes is running away with the event after shooting a 293 with all four of the Lakers’ scores being 75 and lower.

“This was only the second time I’ve ever played this course and that made it a lot tougher,” Osakis senior Peyton Garcia said after carding a 95. “I think I was just struggling and the nerves were getting to me, so none of that really helped.”

Fellow senior Annalise Savageau said those nerves of playing in their first state tournament got to her too and contributed to some higher than normal scores for these athletes. Savageau shot a 93, second best on the team.

Eighth grader Alayna Eldred led the way for Osakis. She shot a 39 on her second nine and finished with an 81. Ariel Chalmers was the Silverstreaks’ fourth scorer at 97, while Emily Backes shot a 99 and Katelyn Foster rounded out the lineup with a 105.

Savageau said she struggled to putt and hit her irons consistently after driving the ball well for most of the day. She started with a 45 on her first nine holes before coming in with a 48 on the front nine.

“It is a difficult course but a lot of it has to do with nerves,” Savageau said. “Golf is more of a mental game, so if you’re nervous, anything can happen.”

Even though she is the youngest player on the team, Eldred came into the state meet with the most experience on this golf course. She competed in the individual state tournament a year ago and that experience helped her after a bit of a slow start.

Eldred shot a 42 on the back nine after starting her round on hole 10. She finished things off with a 39 after a run of six straight pars on the front.

“I didn’t play my best on the first nine and I know I could have improved a lot,” Eldred said. “My putting was a little off today but my second nine I was definitely feeling a lot better about my swing and my game.”

Eldred said she learned a lot about this course and what a player can and can’t do by playing it a year ago. That knowledge helped shape her game plan coming into the day.

“I try to play somewhat conservative at this course because if you try to go for something this course will eat you up,” Eldred said. “I learned that last year, so this year I tried to just get it on the green and go from there. I’ll see how it goes tomorrow.”

The Silverstreaks came into the tournament with a goal of shooting in the top four of the team standings. That will be a tough task with Minnewaska sitting in fourth with a 341.

The Lakers got a 77 from Jenna Janu to lead the way. Ashlyn Guggisberg and Ellen Stensrud each shot 85s and Annika Pederson rounded out the scoring for her team with a 94. Madi McGinty and Ariel Ostrander both played as well, shooting 105 and 112 to round out the Lakers’ lineup.

It wasn’t the team score that Osakis was hoping for on day one, but the Silverstreaks are ready to put that behind them and enjoy the final round of their season on Wednesday.

“I think we’re just trying to at least improve our scores because no one really did that well today,” Garcia said. “But definitely have fun. After tomorrow, there’s nothing past this so we have nothing to lose at this point.”
