St. Michael-Albertville captured championship honors in the State High School Clay Target Competition Sunday at the Alexandria Shooting Park, while Hasting was second and Hopkins was third.

Alexandria finished in a tie for 10th place while Brandon was 16th. Parkers Prairie also competed.

Leading the Alexandria contingent was Tyler Floding with a 95, with Patrick McGaffey of Brandon also shooting a 95. Logan Nibbe led Parkers Prairie with an 87.

"They shot very well," Alexandria coach Scott Green said. "Last year there was a little more than 50 teams and we finished fifth. This year, there was 115 teams and we ended up 10th, so we ended up the same as we did last year percentage wise."

Alexandria varsity shooters battled steady rains during both the morning and afternoon shoots on Sunday. Varsity male high-gun honors went to Brendan McCabe of Hastings with a 98, while Quinn Rohweder of Hopkins was second and Jona Friesen of Detroit Lakes was third.

Varsity female high gun went to Emma Olson of St. Michael-Albertville with Ellen Peterson of Simly second and Jenna Jahnke of Stillwater third.

Alexandria's Kimberly Wilkins was the junior varsity female high gun after busting 91 out of 100 targets for an Alexandria JV team that finished 25th on Saturday. The varsity female high-gun was a 95. Wilkins' finish would have been good for second on Sunday in just her first year shooting.

"That's how good she shot," Green said. "She really shot well. She hit seven out of 25, that's what she started at this spring, and she ended up peaking really nice."
