Alexandria junior swimmer Kris Aaseng, after setting a new school record in the 500 free at the Section 6A meet, improved on that mark twice at the State Class A meet Saturday as he finished fourth in 4:51.69.

That time was more than a half-second faster than his preliminary time, which was also a school record at 4:52.33.

"[Kris] entered the state meet as the fifth seed in the 200 free and the fourth seed in the 500 free," said head coach Mark Storhaug. "He lowered his previous best in the 200 free by 1.6 seconds in Friday's prelims, notching a season best time to remain in the fifth position going into Saturday's finals.

"He did the same type of thing in the 500 free, shaving 0.5 seconds off his team record from a week earlier, keeping his number four position going into the finals on Saturday."

Aaseng finished with an eighth place finish in the finals of the 200 free, racing to a 1:47.76 to earn his second All-State honor.

The Cardinals also earned a 15th place finish as Eric Moe, Zach Cahlin, Austin McCulloch and Aaseng competed in the 400 free with a time of 3:26.07.

"The 400 free relay, seeded 21st, was surprised to make it through the prelims," said Storhaug. "They needed a season-best swim of 3:25.13 and got it, qualifying 15th. The crew stayed 15th in the finals on Saturday with a 3:26.07."

Aaron Pietrowski swam in the preliminaries of the 500 free on Friday, finishing 19th in 5:12.38 and lowering his season best time by 0.5 seconds.

Elliot Jacobson capped his season with a 26th place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.75.

"The Cardinals' 21st seeded 200 free relay foursome of Moe, Kyle Blank, Max Jacobson and Aaseng needed to push their exchanges to have any chance of moving on into the finals, but were a bit too aggressive and were disqualified," said the coach.

The Cardinals finished 21st overall in the Class A meet, competing and scoring in the top 16 of Saturday's finals in three of the five events they had qualifiers.

St. Thomas Academy captured the team title and Monticello was second.
