Alexandria's Vikingland Band Festival is once again an international event, as the 2013 festival will feature a marching band from Norway.

The 29th annual Vikingland Band Festival parade marching championship will be held Sunday, June 30 at 1:30 p.m. The Root Beer Float Concert will be held Saturday, June 29 at 6 p.m. at Jefferson High School in Alexandria.

The Stabekk (STAW-beck) School Band from Oslo, Norway, will perform as the Honor Band of this year's parade. The Norwegian band will also perform with Alexandria's Jefferson High School Marching Band at the Root Beer Float Concert.

This is a return trip for the Stabekk band, which first marched in the festival in 2008. With band members ranging in age from 9 to 19, some of the youngest students from the first trip are returning as senior members.

The Norwegian band will be a highlight of the festival, according to committee chair Greg DeGier.

"The crowd responds so well to the unique style of the Stabekk Band," DeGier said. "We love that they share the Scandinavian heritage of our region, and we also love that they are very good at what they do."

DeGier noted that a festival of this magnitude doesn't happen without the support of generous sponsors and volunteers.
