Schaffer wins feature

Glenwood native Cam Schafer won a feature event in the Traditional Sprint Car Series on August 17 at the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin.

Schafer has been racing at the St. Croix Valley Raceway throughout the summer with some traveling in the Upper Midwest Sprint Car Series.

He is 22 years old and a senior at the University of Minnesota-Crookston.

Hole-in-one at Nordic

Alexandria’s Joanne Lucius-Strand carded a hole-in-one at the par-3 eighth hole on August 19. The hole was playing 105 yards when Lucius-Strand aced it while playing with Jim Erickson, Duane Larson and Marlene Augdahl.

3-on-3 basketball league in Alexandria

Midwest 3-on-3 is hosting 3-on-3 basketball league this fall in Alexandria.

The dates for the second annual Alexandria league are on the Sundays of September 15, 22, 29 and October 6 and 13. They run from 4-9 p.m. and will be played at Discovery Middle School.

Boys and girls in grades 4-12 as of the fall of 2013 can register to play in the tournament. Cost is $55 per player with a $10 online registration fee per team. The Registration deadline is August 25. There will be a $20 late fee for those who sign up after the late registration deadline of September 5.

Alex youth basketball Club meeting

The Alexandria Youth Basketball Club (AYBC) will hold a registration meeting on September 9 from 7-8 p.m. at the Jefferson High School small gym.

The AYBC provides competitive and fun travel opportunities for girls and boys grades 4-8. All players and parents need to attend the meeting. Information sheets and registration forms can be found at www.alexbball.com.

Dirck fall golf club

The Scott Dirck Golf Academy will host a fall club for junior golfers ages 10-18 starting on September 4.

The club will consist of seven supervised practices on Wednesday evenings and five structured practices on Saturday afternoons. There will also be four tournaments to compete in. Two of those will be off site and two will be hosted at the Geneva Golf Club.

ATCC 5K run/walk

The Alexandria Technical and Community Foundation is having a 5K run/walk on Saturday, September 28 with the theme of “Running for Student Scholarships.”

The ATCC Foundation awards nearly $400,000 in scholarship funds each year. Proceeds from the event will go toward student scholarships.

Runners and walkers of all ability levels are welcome. The race will be professionally chip timed. To register, go to www.atcc5k.zapevent.com.

Harvest Duathlon race

The third annual Harvest Duathlon will take place August 31 at 9 a.m. at Discovery Middle School in Alexandria.

The race consists of a 2.5-mile run, a 13-mile bike ride followed by another 2.3-mile run. There are a maximum of 200 entries for the race. There will also be a kids’ duathlon on Friday, August 30 at 6 p.m. for kids ages 2-10.

Curry offers fall baseball

instructional

Alexandria native and former San Francisco Giants’ draft pick Caleb Curry is offering an instructional league for baseball players in grades 7-12.

The league will run on five Saturdays from September 7 through October 5. Grades 7-9 will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with grades 10-12 running from 2 to 5 p.m. at Knute Nelson ballpark.

Former and current professional and collegiate players and coaches are working the league. They will provide an hour of instruction, followed by a seven-inning game. Cost is $100 per player.

Evansville sportsmen’s

banquet

The Evansville Area Sportsmen are hosting their annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, September 14 at the Long Lake Lodge in Brandon.

The banquet will include dinner, prizes and the chance to win a number of different guns. They have room for 150 people and those interested are encouraged to get their tickets early as the cost of dinner tickets increases by $5 each on September 7.

Current cost is $20 each for single dinner tickets. Couples dinner tickets are $35 for two and those 17-and-younger get in for $15. Happy hour starts at 5:30 p.m. with dinner being served at 7 p.m.

PEAK Performance fall

hockey programs

Registration is open for the Heartland Orthopedic Specialist’s 2013 PEAK Performance fall hockey programs.

The programs will offer specific hockey skill instruction by former Minnesota State-Mankato hockey player Ryan Severson. Severson also played professionally for three years for the Fort Wayne Komets of the East Coast Hockey League.

Fall soccer academy

The Alexandria Area Soccer Association is holding a fall soccer academy with six sessions that start on September 6 and run through October 8.

The academy will consist of warm-ups, skills and technical training. The six co-ed sessions will be divided into age groups based upon participants in grades K-2, 3-4 and 5-6 as of the fall of 2013.

Defensive shooting course

The Alexandria Gun Club will hold an introduction to defensive shooting at its outdoor range on Saturday, August 24.

The course is open to those with a carry permit who wish to improve their skills in the use of a handgun for self-defense. It will be led by Kevin Eckhoff, a law enforcement defensive tactics instructor.

There will be two classes from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. Each class is limited to 12 people. All shooters must have a suitable defensive handgun.

Fall dance team program

Lakes Area Recreation will hold dance team training for girls in grades 7-12 with no tryouts necessary.

The program will serve as a starting point and training for dancers who are either interested in or part of the winter competitive Cardinal dance team.

Basic jazz and kick techniques as well as endurance and stretching will be part of the practices, which will culminate in a performance at a Cardinal football game this fall.
