Sports roundup from Tuesday, January 28
Browerville 78, West Central Area 65
The West Central Area boys scored 42 points in the second half but a 12-point deficit at the break was too much to overcome in a 78-65 loss to Browerville on Tuesday night.
The Knights (10-5, 6-3 Prairie) shot just 5-of-27 from the three-point line. Dakotah Kashmark had 20 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals in a losing effort. Jay Zimmerman added 15 points and nine rebounds. Cody Hansmeyer led the Tigers (11-4, 5-2 Prairie) with 22 points. Bryce Irsfeld had 21 and Trevor Johnson added 14.
"We have only practiced for one hour in the past week due to weather and it really showed," WCA head coach Kraig Hunter said. "We really struggled from the field on anything outside the paint."
Battle Lake 45, Ashby 41 (F/OT)
The Ashby girls basketball team fell just short in a Little Eight Conference game with Battle Lake as the Battlers found a way to win a 45-41 game in overtime.
Ashby was up by two with 3.5 seconds left before the Battlers got a bucket to force the extra session.
"We had our chances during the overtime but couldn't get into a rhythm," head coach Troy Mickelson said.
Cassandra Jordan led the scoring for the Arrows with 17 points to go along with three rebounds and three steals. Madison VanSanten added 11 points and five steals.
"The Lady Arrows played with their hearts tonight and worked hard," Mickelson said. "As a coach, I can ask nothing more of them."
Ashby fell to 2-11 with the loss and 1-6 in the LEC. Battle Lake improved to 8-5 overall and to 6-1 in the LEC.
