Sports roundup from Thursday, August 8
Alexandria 6, Wisconsin Rapids 0
Spencer Koopmans of UC Davis saved his best for last on Thursday night as he tossed a gem in his final start of the summer to lead Alexandria to a 6-0 win over Wisconsin Rapids.
Koopmans finished off the complete-game shutout by scattering 10 hits throughout the night but walking just one. He struck out six and lowered his ERA to 4.74 on the season.
He needed to post zeroes through much of the night as the game went into the sixth in a scoreless tie. The Blue Anchors put two on the board in that frame and added four more over the next two innings.
Shea Molitor had a nice night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Michael Barash went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and two RBIs, while Aaron Gretz and Andrew Mulato each had two hits and combined for three RBIs.

The Alexandria VFW 16s split their first two games at the state tournament in Ely on Thursday.
Alexandria opened the tournament at noon with an 8-1 win over Ely before falling to Northfield in a 6-3 game later that day. The 16s then opened things up with a three-run fourth inning.
The 16s will now try to keep their season alive today when they play again at 9:30 a.m.
