LEGION STATE TOURNAMENT
Alexandria 5, Cold Spring 4 F/11; Burnsville 3, Alexandria 0
The Alexandria Legion baseball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Division I Legion State Tournament, beating Cold Spring 5-4 in 11 innings after falling 3-0 to Burnsville.
Parker Bowden delivered the game-winning hit on a single up the middle in the bottom of the 11th inning against Cold Spring. That scored Beau Backhaus, who had walked to lead off the inning. Ben Allen had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
Backhaus went 7 1/3 strong innings. He allowed four runs, just one earned, on three hits and two walks. He struck out five before Bowden worked the final 3 2/3 innings. Bowden was almost perfect, allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out one.
Post 87 couldn't find a way to solve Burnsville starter Tyler Hanson in the 3-0 loss in the opener. Hanson went all nine innings, scattering three hits and four walks, while striking out seven. Blake Stockert was almost as good. He went six innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits and three walks. He also fanned seven, but took a tough-luck loss.
Alexandria had just the three hits, with two of those coming from Allen. Nick Knoblach collected the other.
Alexandria will try to keep its season alive this morning when Post 87 takes on the St. Cloud Chutes at 10 at Braemar Park in Edina.
Duluth 8, Alexandria 7
The Blue Anchors lost on a walk-off single by Michael Suiter as the Duluth Huskies finished off an 8-7 win.
The Huskies erased what had been a 7-1 lead for Alexandria by scoring six runs over the sixth and seventh innings. Eldon Evans threw well for five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. He allowed five earned runs on nine hits. Georgie Salem continued to hit the ball all over the park this summer with three more hits and two RBIs.
