Sports roundup: Alex Legion goes 2-2 at state, Anchors lose late
LEGION STATE BASEBALL
The Alexandria Legion Post 87 baseball team was eliminated from the Division I state tournament on Saturday with a 21-6 loss to the St. Cloud Chutes.
It came after Alexandria beat Rochester 10-7 earlier in the day for its second win of the tournament. Post 87 went 2-2 at the tournament and ended the season 28-12.
Alexandria ran into a buzz saw in St. Cloud as the Chutes pounded out 17 hits in the elimination game. They opened the game up early, scoring nine runs through the first three innings to take a lead they never came close to relinquishing. Grant Hockert took the loss for Alexandria.
Blake Stockert had another big game offensively for Alexandria with two hits, including a home run, to go along with two walks and three RBIs. Stockert also had two hits and two RBIs in the win over Rochester earlier in the day. Travis Krueger and Mitch Thompson each had three hits as they combined for five runs and four RBIs. The Alexandria offense went into the tournament hot and continued that with 15 hits against Rochester and another nine in the losing effort against St. Cloud.
BLUE ANCHORS BASEBALL
Duluth 12, Alexandria 2
The Duluth Huskies (15-14) blew open a close game in the final two innings against the Blue Anchors on Saturday by scoring all 12 of their runs in the eighth and ninth frames.
Alexandria (11-20) led 2-0 at that point before the Duluth offense erupted. Sean Stutzman was cruising through seven scoreless innings but ran into trouble in the eighth.
He took the loss after the first five batters of the eighth inning reached. Two of those came on errors, including one by Stutzman, as the Blue Anchors' defense helped Duluth to a big inning. Stutzman allowed five runs, just one earned, on four hits and a walk. He struck out three.
Alexandria had seven hits on offense. Ben Allen and Jeremy Hyde had two each as Hyde also drew two walks.
These two teams play again today with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch at Knute Nelson Ballpark.
