Sports event offers friendly competition and fun
A Special Education Sports Event was held Wednesday at Discovery Middle School (DMS) in Alexandria.
Students participated in a variety of events, including baton, scoop, and egg and spoon relays, ring tossing challenges and other challenges that incorporated fine motor skills, large motor skills and mathematics.
Mary Rostedt, adapted physical education teacher for District 206, coordinated the event, which involved 30 to 40 kids.
“We wanted to give these kids a chance to be part of something special,” Rostedt said. “They don’t often get to go anywhere like the kids on sports or extra-curricular teams. This gives them a chance to go out and do something with others and to meet new people.”After the events were completed, the students were able to spend some fun time together swimming in the DMS pool.
