Special Olympians take gold at summer games

Six Special Olympic athletes from the Alexandria Area Gymnastic Club competed for medals at the 2013 State Summer Games that were held on June 21-22 at Stillwater High School.

Gymnasts competed in artistic and rhythmic exercises as Crystal Krohnfeldt and Amanda Nelson each won all-around gold at the event. Hannah Poshek took all-around silver, while Nicole Anderson won all-around bronze.

Individual event winners included Sarah Abbott in the rope/clubs exercise. Pam Thull won gold in the Ribbon exercise of the rhythmic events, as well.

In the Artistic events, Anderson and Nelson took gold on the vault. Krohnfeldt did the same on the beam, while Anderson, Krohnfeldt and Nelson all won gold on the floor exercise.

The golf and bocce seasons have begun in Alexandria for the summer. Volunteers are always welcome to help and those interested can contact coach Karyn Sportel at (320) 491-8759 or (320) 852-7664.
