Solem Lutheran Church, located just north of Kensington on County Road 1, served the southwestern corner of Douglas County for 132 years.

After its closing in 2008, the Solem Preservation Association was formed to preserve, improve and maintain the Solem building for the Kensington community and surrounding areas, as well as for people interested in Solem Church heritage.

Each year the board plans three summer activities. The first will be the "Coming Home" worship service on Sunday, May 20.

The annual cemetery meeting will be held in the main church at 9 a.m., with coffee and Norwegian goodies served in the dining room from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m.

At 9:45 a.m. the annual meeting of the Solem Preservation Association will be held in the main church. A worship service with communion will begin at 10:30 a.m. Reverend Hollis Bishop, a former interim pastor for Solem and Nora congregations, will preside.

A potluck dinner will follow the service.

The second summer event is an old-fashioned ice-cream social with barbecues and pie at the church following the Runestone Days parade in Kensington on Sunday, June 17 from 2 to 6 p.m.

The final event is the Fall Harvest Festival on Sunday, September 9 at 2 p.m. Jimmy Jenson will present a program, with lunch following.

The charity chosen by the Solem board to contribute to this year is the Hoffman-Kensington Food Shelf.
