Softball: Minnewaska splits two wild games
In two wildly different games, the Minnewaska softball team split action, falling to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Friday before defeating Morris/Chokio-Alberta Monday.
ACGC 28, Minnewaska 12
Friday's cold and rain might have made things difficult for the Lakers, but they tagged Falcon pitcher Sydney Larson for 12 runs on 12 hits.
Unfortunately, Minnewaska ace Mady Phillips had a worse day, giving up 19 runs on 28 hits in just two innings as Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City rolled to a 28-12 victory.
In all, the Lakers gave up 37 hits in the game as Rachel Bakko also struggled on the mound for an inning and a third, giving up nine runs on nine hits in the five-inning faceoff.
The Lakers got on top early as they scored five runs in the first inning, highlighted by four doubles and a single, but the Falcons came back with six in the bottom of the inning behind three doubles and two singles.
Minnewaska added a pair in the second inning, but saw ACGC surge ahead with seven second-inning runs.
The Lakers pulled to within one run after scoring five times in the third, but the Falcons broke it open as they score inning in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a Hannah Wilner's grand slam.
Minnewaska collected 13 hits in the loss as Julie Helander went 3-for-3 and Phillips, Lexi Amundson and Allyssa Engfer each had two.
Monday, the Lakers shook off their forgettable outing from Friday and enjoyed some better weather and outcome, defeating Morris/Chokio-Alberta 13-2.
The two teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first, but Laker bats came alive in third as they scored three runs on a pair of doubles, a single and an error. Minnewaska added four more in the fourth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Julie Helander had a great day at the plate as she went 3-for five, driving in Lexi Amundson with a double in the first inning, then ripping a three-run homer in the fourth and bringing home a run in the seventh on a sacrifice.
Phillips was also 3-for-5 with two doubles and Kollman was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in.
Phillips picked up the win on the mound as she went the distance, allowing just four hits and three walks, striking out seven.
Minnewaska 2, Morris 1
In a rematch of the previous day between Minnewaska and Morris, the number of hits in the game fell dramatically as the Lakers garnered just four hits off pitcher KcKenzie VanBatavia, but eked out just enough scoring for the win.
Mady Phillips, who earned the win on the mound as she scattered seven hits throughout the game, giving up just one earned run while striking out three, also got the offense going.
She opened the third inning with a walk, eventually scoring. Lexi Amundson also scored.
The Tigers came back to threaten in the fourth as VanBatavia scored on an RBI ground out by Steph Hennen, but Nicole Strobel's ground out ended the inning.
