Softball: Ashby defeats West Central Area
The Ashby softball team pounded out 13 hits in an 18-4 win over West Central Area in the season opener for both teams last Friday.
Madison VanSanten went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Meg Roley, Chelsy Ness and Jeannette Evavold all had two hits apiece and freshman Sammy Johansen collected her first varsity hit and RBI.
Paige Nelson got the win after going all seven innings. She walked nine but allowed just four hits, while striking out 11.
"It was a great win," Ashby head coach Kandace Norby said. "I'm so proud of these girls for playing solid ball after practicing in the gym since March. They had fun today, and it showed on the field and at the plate. I was impressed with their base running, heads-up defense and great patience at the plate while taking aggressive swings."
West Central Area bounced back on Saturday with a 20-6 win over MACCRAY. The Knights put the game away by sending 20 girls to the plate in the sixth inning. Christina Kruize had a two-RBI triple before Amber Oberg cleared the bases with a triple of her own later in the inning.
Doranna Blascyk went six innings to get the win. She allowed three earned runs and struck out three. Kruize helped her out with five defensive putouts behind her.
