Snowmobile safety classes offered

Snowmobile safety classes are off and running in Alexandria. To take the class, students must be 12 by February 1, 2010. There is an adult class available by getting a snowmobile safety CD through the Minnesota DNR for people 16 and older. Anyone born after December 1, 1976 must have a snowmobile safety certificate.

Registration was November 24, but if you missed that night, you may stop at Ollie's Service in Alexandria to enroll and pick up CD materials.

Classroom testing will take place December 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Discovery Middle School cafeteria in Alexandria. It will include roll call, show completion and passing of the Department of Natural Resources' CD. Participants will review and take the written test of 50 questions. Ten or less wrong is needed to pass.

The driving test will take place Saturday, December 12. Participants must know hand signals. A pre-ride inspection of machines will take place. If participants do not have machines, organizers ask they try to borrow a snowmobile or inform an instructor.

The driving test will be at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, west of the West Arena. If your last name starts with the following letter, report at the following time, unless you are sharing a sled:

Last name A-E - 8 to 8:30 a.m.; F-J - 8:30 to 9 a.m.; K-M - 9 to 9:30 a.m.; N-S - 9:30 to 10 a.m. and T-Z - 10 to 10:30 a.m.

Participants should come dressed properly to pass. Bring your helmet; it's the law. After completion, participants will receive a temporary snowmobile safety certificate.
