Neither Douglas County commissioner up for re-election this fall is guaranteed a spot on the final ballot.

For the first time in six years, both races will host September primaries prior to the fall general election campaigns.

Six candidates have filed for office, with groups of three competing for each of the two spots up for grabs on the county board this year.

The filing period ended last Tuesday.

The District 1 commissioner race pitches incumbent Gerald Johnson against newcomers Terry Claggett and Dennis Nagle.

Each candidate has said he has what it takes to get the job done.

In District 3, incumbent Bev Bales will face-off against challengers Jeff Callaghan and Dave Erickson.

At the state level, Representative Torrey Westrom, R-Elbow Lake, will try to hold off two challengers this fall - DFLer Bruce Campbell and Independence party candidate Dave Holman.

State Representative Mary Ellen Otremba, DFL-Long Prairie, will also look to hold onto her seat against Republican Dave Kircher.

DISTRICT 1 COUNTY COMMISSIONER

CANDIDATES

(Robert) Terry Claggett

Age: 62

Personal: Married; long-time county resident

Professional: Small business owner, seaplane pontoon builder

Other experience: Real estate agent for 22 years

Why me: "I have a good business background and understand basic economics in a community. Businesses are necessary for jobs, and that provides the tax money to pay for community needs. I have been a realtor and developed property so I know both sides of the issue. Jumping through bureaucratic hoops can be lengthy and costly, and should be simplified. Input from county residents is important. As a baby boomer, I can now see what the young people as well as the seniors need."

Gerald Johnson (I)

Age: 59

Personal: Married with three children and six grandchildren; lifetime county resident

Professional: Farmer; carpenter; local assessor

Other experience: U.S. Army (1970-71); Urness Township Board member for 13 years

Why me: "I will continue to serve the district with a conservative approach. It's been a challenge to get through the planning for county building projects, keeping costs down, but still getting adequate and functional buildings. Water issues (too much, too little, too dirty, too green, dammed up, ditched out or flushed into a drain) need to be addressed fairly and with common sense. We must continue upgrading and rebuilding our roads to match population growth and heavier traffic."

Dennis Nagle

Age: 65

Personal: Married with three grown children; lived in county for 40 years; currently resides in Moe Township

Professional: Retired

Other experience: County planning and zoning administrator (1974-83); zoning administrator and solid waste management director (1983-92); executive director of Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management Board (1992-2006)

Why me: "We have an opportunity as one of few counties in greater Minnesota recognized for growth to lead and to be progressive in structuring our public policy. It is not responsible government to exist in a state of gridlock, ultimately costing all residents of Douglas County their valuable resources. We have a responsibility not only to embrace that which is good in our county, but also to have the courage to envision opportunities for growth."
