The Osakis volleyball team ran its winning streak in the Prairie Conference to nine matches but not without a fight from West Central Area last Thursday night.

0 Talk about it

The Knights felt like they were in control after winning 25-23 and 25-19 in the first two sets. Osakis showed its experience from there, rallying to win 25-16, 25-18 and 15-9 to put away a feisty WCA team.

“We really need to find a way to start a game with solid consistent passing,” Osakis head coach Kirsten Wessel said. “I was very proud of the way that these girls fought back, though, and played more aggressive.”

The Knights almost spoiled senior night in Osakis as they got off to a torrid start. Holly Van Kempen kept WCA in it all night with 19 kills. Tiana Christenson added 11 and Doranna Blascyk finished with eight.

“Tonight was a really tough loss for us but overall a very impressive game,” WCA head coach Beth Hill said. “Osakis is top of our conference and a fantastic team. We were playing stellar volleyball. We were on and playing very well together as a team. These sets were close to the best volleyball we’ve played all year.”

They couldn’t quite sustain that against a veteran Osakis squad. The Silverstreaks got production from their usual suspects as Brooke Sorenson had a team-high 13 kills to go along with 16 digs and five blocks. Annalise Savageau had 11 kills, 15 assists, 27 digs and two blocks. Brittney Sadlemyer added 10 kills, 18 digs and five blocks and Taylor Spychalla added seven kills.

“Taylor had a great night in the front row,” Wessel said. “Not only did she play great offense, she also played great defense in the front row. Madi Forsell also had a good night at the net.”

That helped the Silverstreaks come away with the win on a night when they recognized four seniors in Savageau, Breanna Larson, Sorenson and Forsell.

“These girls have provided the team and program a great deal of desire, leadership, hard work and role modeling,” Wessel said. “We are very proud of them and hope to make this season last as long as possible with them.”

The Silverstreaks had just one match left on the regular-season schedule after the win over WCA. That came last night, Tuesday, at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. Osakis was 19-6 overall and 9-0 in the Prairie Conference heading into that match. The Knights dropped to 11-7 and 4-5 in league play.
