Sieling to run against Franson in District 8B

Alexandria resident Jay Sieling is running for state representative in Minnesota House District 8B.

He is seeking the DFL endorsement, which will be made at the district’s convention in Alexandria next Wednesday (see related story).

Mary Franson, R-Alexandria, is the District 8B incumbent.

Sieling, an instructor in the liberal arts department at Alexandria Technical College, has taught courses in public speaking, interpersonal communication, technology ethics, ethics, philosophy and religion.

He has been an at-home parent, a small business owner, children’s television host and producer, radio announcer, magician and musician.

Born and raised in rural southern Minnesota, Sieling said he’s a firm believer in the values of rural Minnesota: hard work, stewardship of resources and cooperation.

He and his wife, Deborah Dittberner, have lived in the Alexandria area for more than 20 years and raised three children here.

Sieling said he cares about the same issues that are important to the citizens of this area, including health care, education and infrastructure.

Sieling graduated cum laude from Gustavus Adolphus College, with majors in speech communication and classics, and minors in theater and religion. He completed course work for a Master of Arts degree in speech communication at Pennsylvania State University and earned his MA in humanities from California State University.

Active in the community, Sieling plays in the Calvary Lutheran Praise Band, has volunteered for the American Heart Association, has been on the Community Education advisory board, was a member of the Lake Geneva Association, and has been a regular speaker/entertainer at local Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) graduations throughout the area.
