September is library card sign-up month, a time when libraries across the U.S. remind parents that getting a library card is a smart decision.

The staff at the Douglas County Library is always excited to give a child their first library card. According to the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project, 58 percent of Americans have a library card.

Apply for a library card at any public library in the Viking Library System (VLS). VLS is a federated regional public library system serving Douglas, Grant, Otter Tail, Pope, Stevens and Traverse counties.

Cards are issued to residents and property owners. A driver's license or other photo ID with a current address or a picture ID and a piece of recently posted mail with the current address must be presented.

Kids younger than 14 must have a parent or guardian with valid identification sign the registration form. Cards are issued to children 5 years or older. The child must be present when being issued a card.

The library card is available for use the day it is issued. First-time borrowers can check out three items. When those items are successfully returned, the standard borrowing policies apply.

Visit the Douglas County Library. It offers free access to books, computer, programs and many other services.
