Senior Division: Herzog cruises to second straight title

It took just 14 holes for Alexandria's Steve Herzog to complete his defense of the Senior Division championship against Greg Mattson of Becker last Saturday.

With the win, Herzog is now a back-to-back champion in the Resorters Golf Tournament.

He never trailed in the match, and rolled to a 3-up lead after shooting pars on the first three holes. Mattson won his first hole with a par on No. 4, but Herzog regained his 3-up lead with a par on No. 5.

Herzog's lead grew to 5-up after nine holes were complete, thanks to pars on Nos. 7 and 9.

He took a commanding 6-up advantage with a par on No. 11. Mattson bounced back with his second win of the day on No. 13, but Herzog wrapped up the match with a par on No. 14.

With his 2013 Senior Division title, Herzog is now a 5-time champion at the Resorters Golf Tournament. He also won the Men's Regular Division twice in 1984 and 1993, and the Executive Men's Division in 1992.

As the defending champion, Herzog made it look easy all week. He cruised to a 4-3 victory against Bob Falls in the semifinals, and had an even easier 6-5 win in the quarterfinals against Gary Rolfzen.
