Do you currently have a friend or family member deployed overseas?

The Blue Star Mothers of Alexandria are looking for addresses of military personnel on active duty overseas, so packages/letters can be sent to show them they are supported by those back home.

The Blue Star Mothers are women who currently have or have had a family member on active duty in a war zone.

The group strives to promote community awareness of military men and women overseas and makes efforts to support and encourage them.

Activities include taking part in parades, attending community ceremonies, speaking to various groups about the organization, holding monthly meetings and more.

The group's most important activity is the packages that are assembled and sent to soldiers.

All of the items for the packages come from the local community. They are either donated or purchased from the monetary donations received. The packages include personal items, food and snacks and cards and letters from youth and community organizations.

Following is an excerpt from a thank you note received by the Blue Star Mothers from a military member: "I would like to thank you...items from home are always welcome and we especially appreciate the types of foods/snacks which are unavailable here. Thank you for your support. We feel truly blessed when someone takes the time, effort and resources to take care of us while we're away from home."

The group is also helpful to the mothers of deployed military personnel. One current member said she enjoys the opportunity to talk with other mothers who have had similar experiences, who can understand and can empathize with the joys and difficulties of having a loved one deployed.

All of the Blue Star Mothers' work is accomplished through donations, gifts and grants.

To join the group, donate money/goods or pass along the address and approximate date of expected return of someone deployed overseas, e-mail bsmmn2@hotmail.com or send a letter to Blue Star Mothers of MN, Chapter 2, P.O. Box 1205, Alexandria, MN 56308.

Addresses will be kept confidential and donations will be used as requested. If a donation is not designated, it will be used for postage, shipping supplies and other needed items.

A list of items needed to include in the boxes will be e-mailed to you upon request. Blue Star Mothers is a 501(c)(3) organization and contributions are tax deductible.
