Section 6AA-North girls' basketball: Osakis girls fall to Sauk Centre

The Osakis girls were looking to knock off fifth-ranked Sauk Centre for the second time this season on Saturday night. Turns out, it was a task that was just a little too much to ask for.

The Silverstreaks and Mainstreeters met up in the Section 6AA North semifinals with just five losses between them. That meant one program would definitely have to earn its way to the subsection finals, and that's what the Mainstreeters did in edging Osakis 46-39 at St. John's University.

"They really did a good job of making us extend offensively and not allowing any easy passes or ball reversals," Silverstreaks head coach Pat Kalpin said. "The last four minutes of the game, we tried setting up a few things. They just weren't letting us get into any rhythm offensively. You have to give them credit. They did what they had to do to win this game."

The Silverstreaks held a narrow 22-20 lead at the break and were equally as stingy defensively for most of the night. Sauk Centre came into the game averaging more than 60 points, but the Silverstreaks held them well below that.

Sauk Centre didn't allow a deep Osakis team to get going on the other end. The Silverstreaks had six players score at least five points in a 65-41 win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in the playoff opener last Thursday.

They had just five players score in all on Saturday night. Annalise Savageau led the way with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and four steals. Freshman Brittney Sadlemyer was the only other player in double figures for Osakis with 10.

The Mainstreeters held the Silverstreaks to just 28 field goal attempts and forced 19 turnovers. They also limited opportunities from beyond the arc, where Osakis went 1-of-5.

"I told them in the locker room after the game, they worked so hard all year and to have the season end just like that is tough to swallow," Kalpin said. "They have nothing to be ashamed of. The four losses we did have were to very good basketball teams. It was a year that we won the games we were supposed to win and then some."
