Section 6A tennis: Locals secure individual 6A titles
Osakis had already punched its ticket to the team Class A state tennis tournament. Now the Silverstreaks have added an individual entrant as well.
Taylor Kraemer came into the individual 6A tournament as the No. 2 seed but proved to be too much for the rest of the field. She took down first-seeded Ellen Stensrud of Minnewaska in the title match 6-4, 6-2 to give her the championship.
Kraemer never needed more than two sets in any of her four wins throughout the tournament. She won 6-0, 6-1 over the Lakers' Joelle Thorfinson, 6-0, 6-3 over Jailyn Brinkman of Melrose and 6-1, 6-0 over Grace Brang of Melrose in the semifinals.
Osakis' Lauren Silbernick also battled her way through the singles tournament to finish fourth. Brang edged her 7-5, 6-0 in the third-place match after Silbernick beat Brooklyn Levin of LPGE-USA and Kelly Saunders of Benson-KMS in the quarterfinals. Silbernick then fell to Stensrud in the semis to drop her to the third-place match.
Stensrud will join a couple of her teammates at the state tournament next week as the duo of Rachel Riley and MaKenna Hanson took second in the doubles competition to advance to state. Riley and Hanson came up just short of winning the Section 6A title but fell 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 to second-seeded Brenna and Renee Warren of Parkers Prairie.
Kraemer will take on Mikayla Wing of Staples-Motley to open the individual tournament next Thursday, while Stensrud opens the tournament against Sonya Das of St. Paul Academy and Summit.
Brenna and Renee Warren will take on Michaela Norby and Acacia Foss of Saint James in the doubles tournament, while Riley and Hanson battle Sarah Hays and Gina Nguyen of St. Paul Academy and Summit. Doubles matches will start at 10 a.m. on Thursday, with singles matches starting at 8 a.m. Both will be played at the Read-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
