Section 6A-South softball: Chargers win opener
The Brandon-Evansville softball team won its opening round game in the Section 6A South playoffs on Tuesday with a 9-6 win over Eagle Valley.
The fourth-seeded Chargers used a four-run fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead that it never relinquished. They scored in every inning but the third as they bounced back from a 13-0 loss to Parkers Prairie in the regular-season finale.
"The girls played very well today," head coach Tim Pattrin said. "Megan Kokett was all over the outfield making tremendous catches. The team communicated well and rallied behind another strong pitching performance by Carlie [Steffenson]. [I'm] very proud of them."
Steffenson went the distance to get the win. She allowed 10 hits and six walks but limited Eagle Valley to just the six runs.
Her offense gave her room to work with by producing up and down the lineup. Kokett, Emily Friedrich and Alea Alstead each had two hits. Friedrich, Claire Bedore and Alstead had two RBIs apiece and Kinsley Randt scored three runs.
The win set up a match-up against top-seeded Pillager yesterday afternoon, Thursday. The winner of that game was scheduled to play again last night for a chance to play in the section title game next Tuesday in Menahga.

The season ended for the West Central Area softball team as the Knights fell to Verndale 12-2 in five innings of their Section 6A-South play-in game.
"We put the ball in play, but just couldn't find a hole," said WCA head coach Bryan Poyzer.
The only hit of the game for the Knights went to catcher Lauren McLaughlin.
Verndale used a two-out five-run surge in the fifth to end the game as the Knights had two dropped balls account for the runs.
Freshman Doranna Blasyck took the loss on the mound.
"Doranna has been the workhorse for us all year," said Poyzer. "She doesn't get flustered when things go wrong.
"I am very proud of these girls," he said. "They knew it would be a rebuilding year, and they handled it well."
West Central Area finished the season 3-14.
