Sabrina Zimmel pounded a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but Osakis couldn't overcome a strong offensive effort by Eden Valley-Watkins, falling 11-7 to the Eagles in the Section 5A-West semifinal at Minnewaska Tuesday.

The loss ended the Silverstreaks' season with a 12-5 record.

"Today was a battle between two teams fighting to stay alive," said Osakis head coach John Stigman. "And the game reflected that in how it was played - big plays, big hits and intensity. Both teams did everything they could to stay alive."

The Silverstreak girls started out strong against EVW, but saw a major turnaround in the sixth inning as the Eagles came through to tie the game 5-5, then add six runs in the seventh.

"We got out to an early 5-1 lead, but we didn't get the big hit we needed to put the game away," said Stigman. "EVW hung around and took advantage of a couple of mistakes, then opened things up in the seventh inning, gaining every ounce of momentum left in the game.

"We did not play our best game, and we did not get the knockout blow that we needed to put the game out of reach."

The Eagles began their comeback with two out in the top of the sixth as a double drove in a pair of runs to tie the game before Zimmel struck out the final batter with runners on first and third to end the innings.

The bottom of the inning didn't go well for Osakis either. With runners at first and third, Eagle pitcher Baylee Lahr struck out the final batter to end the threat.

The seventh proved to be a struggle for the Silverstreak defense as EVW's Jamie Scherer earned a one-out walk, then stole second. Brooke Scherer doubled home J. Scherer to give the Eagles their first lead of the game at 6-5.

A bunt by Kaylee Forcier put runners at first and third, with Forcier stealing second, and a walk to Holly Schumacher loaded the bases for Brook Stang. Stang came through with a single to drive home a pair of runners and give Eden Valley-Watkins an 8-5 lead with one.

Zimmel's errant pitch hit batter Lahr, loading the bases for Katie Thes, who walked, bringing another run across for the Eagles.

After Zimmel struck out the next batter, she gave up a two-run single to Mickael Lies-Thielen, making the score 11-5. Zimmel struck out J. Scherer to end the inning.

Zimmel got back a pair of runs with her two-run homer that drove in Mackenzie Staloch, but Osakis couldn't mount another rally.

Zimmel finished the day with a pair of home runs and three runs batted in, while Alex Anderson went 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

J. Scherer had three hits to drive in two runs for the Eagles, with Holly Schumacher hitting a solo home run.

The Silverstreaks also had two runners thrown out at home.

"As disappointing as it is to end your season, especially earlier than you had hoped, this team has seen so much success over the last three years, that when you look at the big picture, you can only be thankful to be a part of what they have accomplished," said Stigman. "We lose five great seniors, five great people. And we will miss them and everything that they have brought to our team and program."
