Section 5A volleyball: Silverstreaks season ends
The match may not have started well, but the Osakis volleyball team pulled it all together to earn a 3-1 win over Kimball and advanced to the second round of the Section 5A-Southwest tournament last Friday.
The win gave the Silverstreaks the dubious honor of facing Class A's No. 9 ranked Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, and Osakis proved up to the test, battling the Jaguars to five sets before falling.
"What an amazing match!" said Silverstreak head coach Kirsten Wessel. "These girls played with all of their hearts and came so close to upsetting BBE. Every girl played an outstanding match.
"Dani's [Chisholm], Tayler's [Waldvogel] and Rachelle's [Rajdl] passing was phenomenal. They passed the majority of their serve receives right near the setter. They also dug up the opponent's hits extremely well.
"Annalise [Savageau] and Mackenzie [Staloch] did a super job of setting," she noted. "Since Mariah [Backes] was ill, the other two setters needed to do the job and did a fantastic job.
"Becka [Sadlemyer], Brooke [Sorenson], Madi [Forsell], Dani, Annalise and Mackenzie did a great job of hitting and getting kills."
Sadlemyer led the way with 11 kills and added an ace block in the battle.
"Ariel [Chalmers] served in place of Josepha [Haider], since she was also ill," said the coach. "Ariel served strong and even accumulated an ace.
"I am so proud of these girls' efforts tonight. They played the best that they have all season. If we had to lose a match, this was the way that I would like to end. They gave it their everything and were so fun to watch."
Osakis ended its season with a 21-8 overall record as well as winning the conference overall title.
Osakis 3, Kimball 1
"We started out very slow," said Wessel. "I don't know if it was first tournament game jitters or what, but we couldn't get a pass up to our setter at all.
"I think the more points that they got against us on our poor serve receive, the more tense we became and passed worse.
"When we did get a decent pass, either the set was off or the hit was errant," she said. "Luckily, games two, three and four were a different story. Kimball made more of the mistakes in the games to follow and our defense gradually improved.
"I was very happy to see the improvement," Wessel added. "This team has had too good of a season to end in the first round.
