The Osakis softball team was one clutch hit away from extending its season on Thursday in the Section 6AA tournament at Minnewaska High School.

Instead, Sauk Centre eliminated the Silverstreaks with a 5-4 victory. Osakis battled back from an early 5-0 deficit to come within one run, but they could not capitalize on opportunities to push the tying run across in the later innings.

“We had our chances in the sixth and the seventh to tie it up, but just couldn’t get that elusive big hit we needed,” Stigman said. “Credit their pitcher; she was able to pitch herself out of two big jams late in the game.”

Morgan Staloch and Jenna Fearing both went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the game. Starting pitcher Rylee Mickle threw 3.1 innings and allowed four earned runs. Amber Giese came on in relief and held the Mainstreeters scoreless the rest of the game.

After the game, Stigman said he felt their season was a success. They managed to stay competitive with a young roster that consisted of only three seniors.

“There is no other way to describe this season other than a success,” Stigman said. “We started the season playing at a high level, we were able to win a conference title, and we put ourselves in a position to move on in the playoffs.”

Stigman said he was happy with the Silverstreaks’ seniors who provided leadership to help reach the season’s goals. Their young players were also credited for filling holes in the lineup left by last year’s graduated seniors.

“As far as our whole team, this was a special group of players,” Stigman said. “They were committed to each other and their word and never quit battling, even to the end.”
