A late rally came up a goal short in the Alexandria boys' soccer team's bid to knock off Bemidji and advance on to the Section 8A semifinals last Thursday night.

The Cardinals scored two goals in the final four minutes of play, but a breakaway goal by the Lumberjacks' Rylee Curb secured a 3-2 win for Bemidji.

The two goals for Alexandria were scored in similar fashion. Eric Maloney and Brandon Ludwig connected on both of them to give the Cardinals some life in the final minutes.

The first goal came with just less than four minutes to play. Maloney was awarded a free kick that he sent toward the net. Ludwig broke free and went up to head it in to make it a 2-1 game.

The Lumberjacks got that goal back two minutes later. Curb took a long pass from Max Hazelton and dribbled past a defender before tucking the ball into the net.

That goal would prove to be huge as the Cardinals scored again with less than a minute to play. Maloney again connected with Ludwig on a free kick as Ludwig headed in his second goal of the game.

Unfortunately for Alexandria, there was only 21 seconds left on the clock. The Lumberjacks ran out the clock and advanced to play St. Cloud Cathedral in the semifinals.

The loss ended a great turnaround year for Alexandria. The Cardinals went from 4-11-3 in 2008 to 11-6-1 this season and champions of the Central Lakes Conference. That CLC title was their second in school history. They finished with a 9-2 record in league play.
