School of Fish (SOF), a fishing class for upper elementary and older kids, recently concluded its 2013 open-water "school year" by hosting its 22nd and final event in Alexandria.

Those 22 schools, including Zion Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Woodland Elementary, New Life Christian Church, Voyager Elementary, all in Alexandria, and Carlos Elementary School, resulted in 458 SOF graduates.

Taught in a fast-paced environment, SOF kids learn about lakes and fish and also learn to tie a fishing knot and rig their own fishing set-up. Additionally, kids leave class with their own rod and reel, tackle pack and more.

SOF is offered to fishing/sportsmen's clubs, civic organizations and retailers. It is designed as a turn-key opportunity that provides all the materials and does the work, while the local group gets the recognition of providing a great opportunity for their community.

Mike Frisch, a professional angler and one of the SOF founders, was quick to praise sponsoring partners who helped make the events successful.

"Lots of local groups stepped up and saw the value in teaching kids in their community about the great sport fishing is," Frisch said.

"Plus, we had awesome support from fishing industry companies and others committed to kids and fishing," he continued. "They made sure SOF graduates had the rods and reels, tackle, snacks and other essentials to make their initial fishing trips successful and enjoyable."

Based on the success of the open-water SOFs, an SOF On Ice class is now being offered as a three-hour ice fishing class. Kids will learn about finding and catching fish under the ice and will learn how to use winter sonar/GPS units.

Several On Ice schools are already scheduled, with the initial schools to be held in November.
