Scherr, Berberich help Osakis to 2-0
The Osakis football team used eight different backs to run their way to 266 rushing yards and a 40-14 win over West Central Area on Friday night.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Silverstreaks broke things open with 20 unanswered points in the second quarter. Hunter Scherr had a big hand in that as he ran in a three-yard score before getting a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown. Scherr had another interception two plays later before Lane Berberich scored on a 15-yard run to give his team all the momentum. That touchdown was set up after sophomore quarterback Hayden Hendricks found Joey Kotek for a 35-yard connection that would have been a touchdown had it not been called back for an illegal block in the back.
"We were a little banged up going into this one and some guys had to step up and fill in for the injured teammates," head coach Bill Infanger said. "Sophomore QB Hayden Hendricks did a great job of running the offense. When we asked him to throw it, he made good decisions and completed big plays for us. He earned the confidence of his teammates tonight."
Junior quarterback Brandon Giesler was told by his doctor to sit this one out because of an illness, which put Hendricks in position to get his first varsity start. He completed that pass to Kotek and also hit Scherr for a two-point conversion in the game. It was a big game for a young quarterback to get some confidence and provide this team with depth at that position.
Hendricks was able to hand the ball off and watch Berberich put together a big game to help put things away. The senior back scored two more times in the second half, once on a one-yard run and another on a 12-yard carry that all but ended things. Joey Garcia then put the finishing touches on things with a three-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Knights' only scores came on a 15-yard catch from Brady Combs and a 60-yard run from Dakotah Kashmark.
The win moved the Silverstreaks to 2-0 and set up a big early-season game at Upsala-Swanville Area this Friday afternoon at 3:30. The Patriots are also 2-0 after beating Browerville 40-20 last week. Osakis and USA have combined to outscore their opponents 164-40 through the first two weeks.
