Ruth Helen Arneson Watson, age 89, a resident of Morris for almost sixty years, died Sunday, Feb. 24, at West Wind Village.
Ruth Watson was born Nov. 11, 1918 in Emmons, Minn. to Dr. A.I. Arneson and Karine Emmons Arneson. She graduated from Morris High School in 1936, attended the West Central School of Agriculture, St. Olaf College, and the University of Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1941. Ruth taught obstetrics in the School of Nursing at the University prior to her marriage to Dr. Robert Watson in 1943.
In 1952 the couple moved to Morris where they raised their four daughters and immersed themselves in community life. Ruth's community activities reflected her many interests - working as a leader with the Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls, singing in the church choir and a barbershop quartet, raising funds for the establishment of the University of Minnesota, Morris, playing championship golf, planting trees, and mowing the grass at Pomme de Terre Golf Course. Ruth also worked as an obstetrics nurse at Stevens Community Hospital and served on the Stevens County Welfare Board.
Ruth didn't know the meaning of "I can't" and tackled any interest or project with the goal of excellence. Never hampered by gender expectations, Ruth was equally at home with a power saw and knitting needles, with trap shooting and gourmet cooking.
Her creativity was evident in the clothing she designed, the mural she painted on the spur of the moment in her living room; and the life-size figures other daughters caroling that she made for a Christmas yard display. She loved puzzles, bridge, the Vikings, music and reading. A stoic Norwegian, she also loved a good joke.
Ruth will be sorely missed by her daughters Terry (Tom) Kellenberger, Sara (Bill) Haugen, Annette (Jon) Wacker, and Laurie (Curt) Burns and her ten beloved grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Belle Lois, Annette, and Karlis, and brothers Arthur and Karl.
A memorial gathering will be held at West Wind Village on Friday, Feb. 29 at 10 a.m. Private graveside services and interment will be held in Royalton.
The family asks that no flowers be sent. Memorials may be made to the Stevens County Food Shelf, 701 Iowa Ave., Morris, MN 56267 or the Courage Cottage, 409 East 1st St., Morris, MN 56267 or West Wind Village, 1001 Scotts Ave., Morris, MN 56267.
