A new bike program at Grand Arbor's Nelson Wellness Center in Alexandria provides residents and members the opportunity to get on a bike again.

The wellness center received a grant from the UCare Fund last October to buy a variety of bikes and launch a year-round bike program.

Their inventory now includes: nine indoor cycling bikes with upright handlebar attachments and larger seats; and 18 outdoor models that range from comfort bikes with seats and pedals lower to the ground, fitness bikes, three-wheeled trikes, recumbent bikes, a tandem bike, a side-by-side tandem and a wheelchair tandem bike.

On May 16, staff rolled out the outdoor bike program and, after a quick session on the features of each bike and a few safety tips, a dozen people took the bikes out for a test ride. The trikes and low-to-the-ground bikes, allowing riders to put their feet flat on the ground, seemed to be most popular with the group.

Grand Arbor residents and Nelson Wellness Center members can check out the bikes and take them for a spin. Plus, there are several bike events planned, including a group ride, pedal and pilates and pedal and picnic trips, and a ride over to the Central Lakes Trail.
