Resorters Golf Tournament: Masters Division, Friday
Here's an update of the Masters' Division Championship in the Resorters Golf Tournament being played at the Alexandria Golf Course after play concluded Friday.
Alexandria's Tom Eidsvold had to upend eight-time champion Ron Clayton in the semifinals last summer to capture his first-ever Resorters title.
This year, he'll have to take down the perennial power once again. Only this time, it's with everything on the line as the two step to the first tee box at approximately 12:20 Saturday afternoon to see who will take home a title.
One of two things is guaranteed. Either Eidsvold will head home as a repeat champion, or Clayton will add an incredible ninth Resorters title to his name. It took Eidsvold more than five decades before he finally broke through and won his first championship at this tournament. Now he has a chance to grab his second in as many years.
Here's a look at how both of these former champions got to this point with a couple of 2-1 wins against their opponents on Friday.
It was a match-up of two veterans who know plenty about this tournament and plenty about this course as Eidsvold edged fellow Alexandrian Dave Harris to secure his spot in today's finals.
Both players started with a par win through the first two holes before Eidsvold took some early momentum with a couple bogey wins on Nos. 3 and 4. That's how things stood before Harris' birdie on No. 7 cut his deficit in half.
Eidsvold had an answer for every run Harris threw at him, though. He got a birdie win of his own on eight and used a par win on nine to head to the back at 3-up.
Harris made another move by taking advantage of the par fives. He birdied Nos. 12 and 14 to earn wins and make it a one-hole match with four to go. Eidsvold made sure it didn't last that long, though. He used a par on 15 to move to 2-up before the two players halved the next two holes to end things after 17.
Clayton had to take down another former champion to get to the finals but he found a way against 2010 Masters Division champion George Mikesh of Scottsdale, Arizona.
Clayton struck first with a par win at No. 2 that set the tone for his front nine. The Sarasota, Florida resident shot 38 before the turn and took as much as a 4-up lead when he parred No. 8. That put the finishing touches on a stretch of three straight wins for Clayton that included birdies at Nos. 6 and 7.
Mikesh tried to battle back. He gathered consecutive wins at Nos. 9 and 10 to cut his deficit to two holes, but Clayton answered again with a par win at 11. The two halved the next four holes before Mikesh got a par win at 16. It was too little, too late, though, as Clayton put things away when both players parred the 17th.
