Resorters Golf Tournament: Executive Men's Division, Friday
Here's an update of the Men's Executive Division Championship in the Resorters Golf Tournament being played at the Alexandria Golf Course after play concluded Friday.
It's a field filled with former champions and Jeff Johnson of Chaska trying to make sure none of them add to their trophy case in the Men's Executive Division.
Daryl Schomer shot 2-under on the front and cruised to a 5-4 win over Chad Johnson of Burnsville to keep his hopes of a repeat title alive. Standing in his way will be Johnson, who's trying to grab his first Resorters championship, in the semi-finals.
Whoever wins will have to go through another defending champ in either St. Cloud's Stefan Freeman or Tim Peterson of Lino Lakes Saturday afternoon.
Here is a closer look at how each of them got here before they tee off bright and early at 6:54 Saturday morning to see who will play for a title later in the day.
SCHOMER DEF. C. JOHNSON, 5-4
Schomer never left any doubt in this one as he shot 2-under on the front and 3-under overall through 14 holes before things ended in a 5-4 win over Chad Johnson.
Johnson's only win was an impressive one as he eagled the par-5 12th. That wasn't enough to keep pace, though, as Schomer was a model of consistency from start to finish. He got a birdie win on three before both players birdied No. 6.
Two holes later, Schomer started a run of three straight par wins as he started to stretch out his lead. He added to it with another par win on 13 before his birdie on No. 14 ended things in style.
J. JOHNSON DEF.
Jeff Johnson definitely earned his spot in the final four.
He locked up in an 18-hole battle with Lakeville's Kevin Farley before prevailing when both players bogeyed 18. Neither player separated them-selves by more than one hole all day in this one.
Johnson broke an even match when he got a par win at 15. That proved to be the difference as the two players parred the next two before the bogeys on 18 left Johnson with his spot in the semifinals.
Farley had a narrow lead through the first four holes after a birdie win on No. 1. Johnson got it back with a par on No. 5 and took his first lead with a par on the very next hole.
They went into the turn like that before both players birdied No. 11. Farley evened things up with a par win on 12, but he wasn't able to build on that as a bogey on 13 opened the door for Johnson to retake the lead. They went back-and-forth over the next two holes, and it was Johnson's win on 15 that proved to be the difference in the match.
S. FREEMAN DEF.
Freeman played like he's ready to challenge for a second Executive Division title on Friday afternoon.
The 2009 champion was 2-under on the front and played at 1-under through 14 holes before he ended things with a 5-4 win over Todd Wagner. Freeman was already 1-up when he found his groove over the final three holes on the front. He birdied all of them to take a commanding lead at the turn.
He never came close to relinquishing that. Freeman got a par win at No. 10 before Wagner carded his only birdie of the day to take the 11th hole. But Freeman answered with a birdie of his own on 12. Two holes later, it was all over after Freeman used a par to end things after 14.
The 2011 champ had his game working on Friday and he needed to as Buffalo's Ken Basten pushed him but couldn't overcome Peterson in a 3-2 match.
Peterson finished his day with four birdies. Three of those led to wins, with his first coming on No. 2 to grab the early advantage. The Lino Lakes golfer was 2-up after a par win on No. 4 before his birdie on six and par on seven opened up a four-hole lead.
Not even a birdie for Basten on eight could cut into the lead as Peterson answered with a birdie of his own. Basten did everything he could to try to climb back in it on the back. He carded three of the four birdies in his round once they made the turn.
Peterson matched that on 12 and Basten's birdies on 10 and 14 still left him two back. That's the kind of day it was for Peterson as he ended things after a par win on 16.
