Resorters baseball playoffs: Bluedogs and Osakis to play for final region spot
The Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs will face an up-and-coming Osakis team this Saturday for the right to secure the final spot in the Region 16C tournament.
The Bluedogs guaranteed themselves of that chance by winning a 9-2 game against Ashby this past Sunday after Osakis had dropped them to the loser’s bracket on Saturday.
Brandon-Evansville needed to beat Ashby to keep its season alive and left little doubt in doing so. Adam Johnson gave the Bluedogs seven good innings to secure the win. He dominated the Ashby lineup to the tune of 13 strikeouts, while allowing just one run on four hits and two walks.
Mike Bruns closed things out by working the final two frames. He allowed one run on two hits, while striking out two.
Brandon-Evansville blew things open in the middle innings. The Bluedogs scored two in the fourth and three each in the fifth and seventh frames.
Shawn Krueger had three hits and a run scored to lead the offense. Monte Hinzmann had a double, a walk and was hit by a pitch on his way to driving in two runs. Johnson and Nate Meissner both drove in two, as well.
Saturday’s game means a rematch between Osakis and Brandon-Evansville after the Hawks pounded out 17 hits in a 13-4 win over the Bluedogs in the West semifinals.
Osakis’ Derek Waldvogel used all that offense to his advantage as he threw a complete game for the Hawks. He got the win despite nine walks issued by working out of trouble through the night.
Nate Meissner went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored, while Josh Meissner was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. The Bluedogs couldn’t generate much more offense than that as they fell in what was their first game of the tournament after earning a first-round bye.
Osakis and Brandon-Evansville are scheduled to play on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Evansville. Many Hawks players also play on the top-seeded District 7 North Legion team that same day, which could cause a conflict with that start time, depending on the outcome of Osakis’ first game that morning.
The winner between Osakis and Brandon-Evansville will wrap up a Region 16C bid and take on Urbank on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Bombers need just one more win to take the West Division playoff championship, while Osakis or Brandon-Evansville would have to win twice to secure the title.
