Reserves rally WCA boys
The West Central Area boys’ basketball team showed off its depth on Tuesday night as the Knights’ bench players rallied their team to a 67-59 win at Swanville.
The Knights trailed by nine with 12 minutes left before going on a 39-22 run to close the game. Their first lead of the night came on a Hunter Pfingsten basket with just more than four minutes left to give his team a 50-49 edge.
“It was one of those nights where we had to show a lot of resiliency because none of the bounces went our way,” WCA head coach Kraig Hunter said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well and had a lot of players in foul trouble, but we kept scrapping it out to find a way to win. We are used to being a team that shoots the ball well from the three-point line, but it was one of those nights where we had to rely on our defense to keep us in the game.”The Knights also had to rely on their reserves. Four starters found themselves on the bench with two fouls in the first half as Swanville built a 19-9 lead. The WCA bench came on and ignited a 15-6 run that cut the Bulldogs’ lead to just one at the half.“Our role players were huge tonight,” Hunter said. “Jared Oachs, Ben Anderson and Hunter Pfingsten especially all gave us good play off the bench. Jay Zimmerman really stepped it up, and in the second half, Dakotah Kashmark was big hitting free throws down the stretch.”Kashmark had 21 points, four assists and 10 rebounds to lead the Knights. Zimmerman added 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Pfingsten finished with 11 points. In the end, 21 free throws also helped the Knights overcome a 4-for-24 night from beyond the arc.The win moved WCA to 4-1 overall and to 2-0 in the Prairie Conference. They will be at Royalton tonight, Friday, for another league game.GAME STATISTICSWCA 24 43 – 67SWANVILLE 25 34 – 59TOTALS – WCA – FG – 21-59; Three-point FG – 4-24; FT – 21-30; Rebounds – 46; Turnovers – 17; Swanville – FG – 17-50; Three-point FG – 6-19; Rebounds – 36; FT – 19-32; Turnovers – 17WCA – Kashmark – 21 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists; Zimmerman – 16 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals; Pfingsten – 11 points; Brady Combs – 6 points, 6 rebounds; Anderson – 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals; Austin Redepenning – 3 points, 2 assists, 2 steals; Andrew Lindor – 2 points; Oachs – 2 points
