The Bluedogs beat Pelican Rapids 9-1 in their first game in the quarterfinals. They then saw a late lead slip away in a 10-5 loss to Midway in the semifinals. That dropped them to the losers' bracket, where they will play the winner of Fergus Falls and Osakis for a spot in the state tournament and the region title game.

The Hawks kept their season alive after beating Pelican Rapids 14-8 this past Sunday. That came after an 11-0 loss to Fergus Falls in the opening round last Saturday.

Brandon-Evansville was leading 5-4 before the wheels came off in the eighth inning against Midway on Sunday. The Snurdbirds used six hits and three errors by the Bluedogs in the inning to take a 10-5 lead. Brad Lusti made sure that held up as he tossed four straight scoreless innings after giving up a run in the fifth.

Collin Modahl took the loss for Brandon-Evansville. He threw the first 7 1/3 innings, allowing 10 runs, six earned, on 13 hits and a walk. He struck out three before giving way to Kyle Bruns with one out in the eighth. Bruns allowed a hit and struck out one in recording the final two outs of the inning.

Lee Nelson had his second straight multi-hit game to lead the Bluedogs' offense. He got his team going with a three-run home run in the first inning before adding a double later in the game. Modahl and Nate Meissner also added two hits apiece in the losing effort.

The Brandon-Evansville offense scored five runs through the first three innings to run away with things in a 9-1 win over Pelican Rapids on Saturday. Nelson got his team going again with a two-out, two-run home run in the first inning. Meissner had a huge day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two home runs, two walks, three RBIs and four runs scored.

That was plenty of offense for Adam Johnson. He dominated the Pelican Rapids lineup with 15 strikeouts in the complete-game victory. Johnson allowed just four hits and three walks, with his only blemish being a solo home run given up to start the fourth inning.

Osakis will play for the right to take on the Bluedogs as the Hawks take on Fergus Falls in Perham at 5 p.m. on Saturday night. The winner of that game will play Brandon-Evansville immediately after that, with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship game against Midway at 1:30 p.m.

Osakis got to this point after 12 runs through the first four innings of its 14-8 win over Pelican Rapids this past Sunday. Chad Zimmel led that offensive attack with a 4-for-6 day at the plate that included a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Drew Fearing added three hits, including two doubles, to go along with two runs scored and an RBI, while Cory Collins was 3-for-6 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs.

That got Zimmel a complete-game victory from the mound. He scattered 13 hits but walked just one and struck out five in his nine innings of work.

The Hawks needed that win to stay alive after falling to Fergus Falls the day before. The Hurricanes' Kyle Shaikoski held Osakis to just two hits in eight innings. He walked one and struck out six.

Matt Laven started for the Hawks but lasted just three innings after allowing four runs on five hits and four walks. Fearing didn't fare much better through the final four innings, allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and four walks.
