Carlos is the only team from the Resorters East still alive in the Region 14C Tournament after the Cougars ended Miltona's season in the losers' bracket this past Sunday.

The Cougars kept their season going with the 9-0 win over Miltona after they dropped their first game of the summer to Detroit Lakes on Saturday. The runners-up from the Hi-Way 10 Division stymied the Carlos offense in a 6-1 game in the quarterfinals. That came after the Cougars advanced through the first round with an 8-1 win over the Perham Pirates.

Carlos got a combined two-hitter from Neil Jenzen, Matt Hoelscher and Mark Hillesheim against Miltona. Jenzen went the first seven innings, allowing just one hit and two walks. He struck out six before giving way to Hoelscher who pitched a scoreless eighth. Hillesheim then finished things off with a perfect ninth.

The Cougars got two hits and three RBIs from Troy Putnam. Ryan Severson added two RBIs, while Joe Snaza had two hits and a run scored.

Carlos couldn't get the offense going against Detroit Lakes' Chris Gilson in the quarterfinals. Gilson went all nine innings for the Angels, scattering seven hits and five walks on his way to allowing just the one run.

Ben Bruggeman had allowed just one earned run all season coming into this game. He gave up six against Detroit Lakes as he walked five and allowed four hits.

Carlos will be in a must-win situation when they take on Perham again tonight, Friday, at 8 p.m. in New York Mills. The winner of that game will play the Bertha Blazers at 5 p.m. on Saturday with a chance to secure a spot in the state tournament and punch its ticket to the Region 14C title game.

The region championship is scheduled for 8 p.m. in New York Mills on Saturday. Detroit Lakes has already advanced to that game after a 9-7 win over Bertha in the semifinals.

Miltona ended its season with a 14-7 overall record after being shutout by the Cougars for the fifth time this summer. The Tigers got to that game with a 12-8 win over New York Mills last Saturday after falling to Bertha 8-7 in the opening round.

The Tigers trailed 7-3 against New York Millers before exploding for nine runs in the late innings. They turned that four-run deficit into a one-run lead with a five-run seventh.

They added four more in the eighth that was highlighted by three straight doubles from Ryan Silbernick, Ryan Peppersack and Wyatt Samuelson. Peppersack worked the final three innings on the mound to preserve the win for Miltona.

The Tigers saw a late lead slip away in the 8-7 loss in 10 innings to the Blazers earlier that day. Dalton Leuschke hit a two-run home run in the sixth and a two-RBI double by Sam Steidl to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth. Tigers' ace Shawn Krueger ran into a little bit of trouble in that frame as the Blazers got two to tie it.

That's how the game went into a wild 10th inning. Miltona scored three runs in the top of the inning and had two other runs cut down at the plate. That proved costly as Bertha came back with four runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to walk-off with the one-run win.
